Today's Featured Blog Postings for Thursday, March 11th
Each day our editors monitor 50 wine industry blogs and select the most relevant, recent postings. A summary of each posting with a link to the blog is listed below.

Useless California Vintage Reports: A Template March 11th I get my fair share of wine samples, with a large proportion coming from California. This is due mostly to proximity (regional wines), as well as the fact that the CA makes a the vast majority of U.S. wine, hence the large number of CA samples stopping on my doorstep.

vintage of the (fill in the blank) March 11th 1WineDude has an outstanding blog today headlined "Useless California Vintage Reports: a Template" (see link to the left). It brings up a topic I've been saving for a special rant - I mean discussion. Which is, why rate vintages at all?
A Year in Wine
Outstanding In Their Field March 11th "Field blends" - wines from a mix of grape varieties grown, harvested and fermented together - are the subject of an intriguing feature in today's Los Angeles Times. The point of the article seems to be that zinfandel is much better when it's made this way, and that it's a shame more consumers don't know that.

Finger Lakes Riesling gets tanked March 11th The alternative packaging trend gets bigger and reusable: a 2009 Riesling from the Finger Lakes in 20-liter tank will soon be available in NYC.

What I tell winemakers March 11th It used to be, for most of my wine writing career, that I visited winemakers (and winery owners) to listen, not to talk. In the beginning, I had much to learn: about viticulture and enology, about the business side, about how they had gotten into wine, about the local history and terroir and so on.
REthink Wine Blog
REthink Compliance: Changing the "Whether" March 11th Wine shipping compliance is much the same way, with most wineries grumbling about whether it is worth taking on the hassles compliance can bring. The question is whether they want to do anything about it.

Small Italian Wineries Struggle to Crack U.S. Market March 11th Small Italian wineries producing handcrafted wines are struggling to break into the U.S. market. For every giant like Antinori or Frescobaldi there are hundreds of small producers who can't provide the large volume distributors demand.

Week 6: Boxed Wine Experiment with Duca del Frassino's Garganega/Pinot Grigio March 11th I'm a huge proponent of boxed wine. I regularly have a box of white wine in my refrigerator for easy access. It's a great space saver, and they allow me to buy a lot of wine at one time. I love having it and not having to store it elsewhere, or worrying about it becoming oxidized if we don't enjoyed within a few days.

Field Notes from a Wine Life - In Situ Edition March 11th We're all somewhat familiar with the small tasting glasses that are de rigueur in tasting rooms and juried, comparative wine competitions across the country, but I would hazard a guess that few consumers have them in their possession save for the keeper glass that was purchased at a winery tasting.
Fermentation: The Daily Wine Blog
Swirl, Smell, Slurp, Read. March 11th It has been a while since I've highlighted a new wine blog that has come across my radar in a positive way. But I couldn't help writing today about SWIRL, SMELL, SLURP, a newish wine blog that is every bit as fun to read as it is hard to say quickly.
the Wine Magnet
Social Search has arrived. March 11th When Google Social Search is in full force, and users understand it's implications, there shouldn't be any remaining skepticism about social media. Those who continue to ask and wonder if it's right for their brand or their company need only type their own name into a search, and witness the tweets, videos and other pieces of social media content that come up on that search to know the power of it.
